I’ve been wondering as the Nebraskan plains
close over my head as they melt away into the chill night eternal
in its rotations
in boxcar sitting solemnly as the stars wink out one by one
as in accordance with the
rail track beating
of link after iron link the rails clanking loudly hollowly in my ears
with the cold mirrored in my eyes
I just lay on the freezing rigid floor smelling of metals and goods
and rolling a cigarette
I read with the moon my light
and looking back I nod farewell to the life I knew
fading away into memory
the stale city lights still blazing in their way
like little gross christmas lights strung out too far and straining
with the pulses of a million souls
suffocating under the burden of a thousand weepings
trembling with the hundreds of mass-less forms on steps shivering
I feel claustrophobic looking back on the only life I had known
shaken free from such bonds
I can only ride forward with the promise of not knowing
completely what it is
